Photo: Moon and Jupiter

This is a photo I captured of last night’s close pairing of the Moon and Jupiter. Jupiter does not look very impressive in the photo because it is underexposed relative to the moon; the moon is so much brighter than Jupiter, even though they are both impressive to the naked eye. So I had to keep the exposure time short in order to keep some of the details of the moon’s surface.

The moon appeared very close to Jupiter on January 21, 2013.

  1. I was lucky and tickled to see a very distinct star last night (early, before the sun was fully set and it was still light out). Now I know it was Jupiter. Thanks, Rex.

    1. You’re welcome. Jupiter can indeed be seen during the day while the sun is still up (in late afternoon or early morning). It’s just usually hard to pick out in the blue sky. But the moon was so close on Monday that looking in that direction would have revealed the bright planet.
